The first day assignment tested our drawing abilities. I created depth and texture using shadows and highlights within the bird, the hand, and the tree. I also utilized one point perspective drawing to make a street scene that accurately created depth.
Blind Contour Hand Drawings
During this assignment, we drew our hands using contour lines to practice fluid lines that create depth and movement. We drew these hands blindly not looking at the paper to focus on the lines we saw in our hands and to try to create accurate proportions. Another requirement of the project was not lifting up our pen throughout the drawing to emphasize the role of contour lines.
Modified Contour Hand Drawings
During this assignment, we drew our hands using contour lines while looking at the paper. We focused on the lines seen in our hand which created movement within the drawing. During this drawing we also could not lift up our pen throughout the drawing to practice the placement of contour lines.

Final
During this project we used our contour line drawing skills to draw a shoe. We used a real life shoe and focused on the lines of the item to create an accurate scale and depth. We drew 2 practice drawing and then 1 final using the best techniques and starting place learned from the previous drawings.

Final Artwork
- Yes, I have used a fluid line in my final project. This is evident because I never lifted up my pen during the whole drawing. Every line is connected and does not stop at any point.
- The practice contour drawing helped me by allowing me to experiment with a fluid line. The previous drawings helped me to recognize what lines to follow and draw and how to organize my piece to create accurate movement. The previous drawing also helped me to learn how to create texture and dimension within the drawing.
- In an outline drawing, only the edges of each object would be shown. This contour piece uses a fluid line to go within and around objects to create movement and dimension within the objects. This contour drawing focuses on the texture of the items as well.
- Interpretation of line in this drawing was very important because this piece only uses a singular, fluid line throughout the entire drawing. A single line needs to have the effect of texture, movement, depth, and proportion to the viewer. Making sure your lines are accurate to the real-life objects is crucial to the success of the drawing.
- The thing that I learned most from this project was to focus on the movement of the real-life objects and draw the line you see not the line you think you see. If I was to redo this drawing I would add more detail within the table objects and posters and paintings on the wall. I also think I could improve on the stability of my lines and make them more straight.
Shading Lesson
For these assignments we learned how to sketch by using highlights and shadows to add value. We practiced on different figures and sketched a still life using those figures. Another part of this assessment was practicing placement of highlight, reflected highlight, cast shadow, core shadow, and mid tone to create dimension.

White Ribbon Excersize
In this excersize we practiced shading while drawing a ribbon on black paper. I used a charcoal pencil to create highlights and shadows to add dimension to the ribbon. I also focused on the areas that the ribbon bended and curved and adding appropriate highlights and dark areas to successfully add dimension.
Fabric Shading
In this assignment, we used black charcoal, white charcoal, and regular pencil to shade areas of fabric. I focused on shading highlights and shadows to add value with each medium. Each area of fabric offered different areas of bends to create movement and dimension throughout the drawing.
Final Artwork
Composition sketches, references photo, brainstorm ideas: central focus-cup, focus on strong highlights within brushes, use small lines to create texture of cat
1. My drawing has clear edges separating objects and blended areas within the objects. Strong separate lines helped to create contrast between the different objects. I also added defined spaces of value and also background.
2. I believe that my areas of value and shadow are lifelike. I added highlights and shadows within every objects and between the contrast of each objects. Values are very important to not only show variation between the drawing but to also add dimension and depth within the drawing.
3. Yes, the light source comes from the front of the drawing heavier on the left side of the paper. The light source helps to give an area to place highlights and shadows which then gives the drawing a more realistic look.
4. The composition sketches were very important to plan a drawing that is pleasing to the eye. The composition sketches also helped to plan out areas of shadow and highlight. These areas determine which objects are pulled forward or backwards to relate it to my reference photo.
5. My final drawing is successful through my values and textures. I enjoy my texture within the stuffed snake and cat. Even though I have only shown a bit of the cat, I feel as though the texture is similar to the actual stuffed animal. I also really enjoy my highlights and shadows within the paintbrushes and the shoes. I believe I have created a accurate level of dimension within the objects.
6. Yes, I planned out the sketch of my drawing by drawing grid lines to create accurate proportions. I have also added value to create a dimensional perspective in my drawing. Overall the piece looks pretty similar to the real life reference
7. Yes, I believe I have picked a pleasing composition by looking for a well balanced arrangement of objects. I have balanced negative space with a strong but not overpowering positive space. I have also create variation between the darkness and lightness of objects such as light shading within the fabric and dark shading within the cup and shoes.
8. The center of interest in my drawing is the cup with the paint brushes in it. It is located slightly off center of the drawing and is located in the foreground. It also stands out because of its darker shading.
9. I feel as if I have managed my time well. I planned my sketches and shading during the first couple of days of class and finished my final within the last few. I have had time to successful create my piece without rushing and finished with time to spare.
10. Challenges that I faced during this piece include shading of texture within the snake and the fabric. The unique texture of the snake was hard to capture because the bristles were so small and close together. I also struggled with create different tones and value within the objects. I overcame these struggles by spending extra time to create strong value and small areas of individual pieces.
11. I have learned many skills relating to adding strong values to create contrast. I also spent time creating direction within the object which relates directly to other pieces with other mediums. I also used and learned patience when adding texture to objects.

Perspective Drawings
For this assignment we followed tutorials to practice perspective drawings. We created a room and a cratered cityscape in one point perspective. We also did cityscapes using two point perspective and three point perspective in worms eye view and birds eye view.
Prismacolor Practice
For this assignment, we practiced using prismacolor pencils to draw spheres and cones. We practiced how to layer the prismas, how to use colors to create a realistic look, and how to create dimension by adding highlights and shadows. We also practiced drawing these shapes of different colored paper to tell the difference between the way that the prismacolors appeared.

Final Reflection
Over the semester I feel that I have greatly benefited from taking drawing class. In previous classes such as Art 1, painting, and Art 4, I feel I have expanded upon my skills regarding painting and other mediums. Drawing has expanded my skills regarding mediums including graphite, charcoal, prismacolor, and colored pencil. Throughout the semester I have learned about using detail to add strong value, blending to add texture, and practice and patience to create proportional dimensions.
Out of all the projects that we did during the semester, I found that I enjoyed the still-life project the most. I found it very exciting to draw from life and also to use graphite and charcoal. This is one of my most successful pieces in this class because of the inclusion of a strong range of values which we practiced a lot during this unit. The project is also a success because of the intentionally placed highlights and shadows which created dimension along with texture. Being one of the first major projects of the semester, I feel as though the techniques and skills which I learned from it benefited me throughout the rest of my projects.
Another project that I enjoyed and challenged me was the final scratch board project that we did. I found it challenging to think about and plan my strokes on the scratch board to ensure a realistic drawing. This project especially tested my ability to be intentional with my drawing and really think about how to make a 2D piece look 3D while showing texture and movement. I feel as though this project showed my growth from the beginning to the ending of the semester.
Upon entering this class I had a fairly good understanding of placement of value, and how to add texture, composition, and dimension within a painting. After taking this class I feel that my knowledge of art has been expanded upon by challenging myself to create pieces that I would not normally gravitate towards. There are many skills I have acquired throughout this semester that I plan to use during future projects and classes like AP art. I thoroughly enjoyed drawing because I got to meet lots of new people that do not usually take art and I got challenge myself by creating new pieces different from my normal style. Overall, I think this semester was a success and I am excited to continue drawing and painting next semester!
